Do I Need A Life Coach?

Rhiannon Bush

If you've ever felt stuck, uncertain, or like you’re capable of more but can’t quite break through, you might have wondered: Do I need a life coach? It’s a question many high-achievers and professionals ask themselves at some point in their careers and personal lives. And if you’re here, it means you’re at least curious. So let’s talk about it.

What Exactly is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is about transformation. It’s not therapy, counselling, or mentorship—it’s a structured, forward-focused approach that helps you bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Whether it’s career advancement, confidence, productivity, relationships, or health, coaching is designed to help you unlock your potential and take intentional action toward your goals.

A life coach doesn’t give you the answers; they ask the right questions that empower you to find them. They help you identify patterns, break through self-imposed limitations, and create a clear, actionable plan for change.

Why Do People Work with Life Coaches?

People hire life coaches for a variety of reasons:

  • Career transitions or professional growth

  • Overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome

  • Developing leadership and communication skills

  • Managing stress, time, and productivity

  • Breaking free from limiting beliefs and old habits

  • Enhancing relationships and personal fulfilment

  • Improving health, fitness, or financial habits

But at the core of every coaching engagement is this: you want something different, and for some reason, you haven’t been able to get there on your own.

The Thought-Feeling-Action Cycle

One of the most profound insights life coaching brings is an understanding of how our thoughts shape our reality. Here’s something to pay close attention to: All of our actions are driven by our feelings, and our feelings are created by our thoughts.

Think about a habit you’ve struggled to break - maybe it’s procrastination, emotional eating, avoiding difficult conversations, or not prioritising yourself. The behaviour might seem like the problem, but it’s actually a symptom. The real issue lies in the thoughts that trigger the feeling that drives that action.

For example, let’s say every night, after a long day, you unwind with chocolate and Netflix. You tell yourself, “I deserve this. It’s how I relax.” But afterward, you feel guilty and frustrated. If you keep focusing on just the behaviour (trying to resist the chocolate), you might succeed for a few days, but eventually, you’ll fall back into the pattern. Why? Because you haven’t addressed the underlying thoughts and feelings creating the behaviour in the first place.

When we change the thought, we change the feeling, and ultimately, the action follows.

Real Change Happens in an Instant

You’ve probably heard stories of people making drastic life changes overnight—someone who quit smoking cold turkey, someone who lost weight and never looked back, someone who went from self-doubt to unstoppable confidence.

What triggered the change? A new thought.

Take my partner, for example. He was bullied about his weight for years. Then, one day, something snapped. He had a new thought: “I’m done feeling this way.” That thought shifted his emotions, which changed his actions—he immediately started cooking healthier meals, exercising, and prioritising his health. He lost 40kg and never looked back.

The key isn’t waiting for that thought to happen naturally. It’s cultivating it intentionally. And that’s exactly what coaching helps you do.

Is Life Coaching Right for You?

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about your next steps, a life coach can help you gain clarity and create momentum. But coaching isn’t for everyone. It’s for people who:

  • Are ready to take ownership of their lives

  • Want to create real, lasting change

  • Are open to self-reflection and growth

  • Are willing to take action, even when it’s uncomfortable

If you’re looking for someone to fix your problems for you, coaching won’t work. But if you’re willing to do the inner work and take intentional action, coaching can be life-changing.

Coaching vs. Therapy vs. Mentorship

One of the biggest misconceptions about life coaching is that it’s the same as therapy. It’s not. Here’s how they differ:

  • Therapy is past-focused. It helps you process trauma, heal emotional wounds, and understand the root causes of your challenges.

  • Mentorship is about learning from someone with experience in a specific area—modelling their behaviour and following their advice.

  • Coaching is future-focused. It’s about defining where you want to go and helping you get there with a clear, structured plan.

A good coach will also recognise when therapy is needed and refer you to a mental health professional if necessary.

Your Next Step

If any of this resonates with you - if you’re feeling stuck, if you’re tired of repeating the same cycles, if you know you’re capable of more but just can’t seem to get there - then coaching might be exactly what you need.

You deserve to live a life that excites you. The only thing standing in the way? A thought. And you have the power to change it.

Let’s make it happen.
